Health Insurance Requirements

Traditional Undergraduate Students

MidAmerica Nazarene University requires that all full-time undergraduate students (12 or more credits) must have health insurance or choose to waive the coverage.

  • Students entering the fall term will automatically be charged the prevailing fall health insurance premium and enrolled in the health insurance plan. The premium covers the fall term.
  • Students entering the spring term will automatically be charged the prevailing spring health insurance premium and enrolled in the health insurance plan. The premium covers the spring and summer terms.
  • Health insurance is not automatically charged for the summer term but may be purchased on a voluntary basis directly through the company.

International Students

The United States Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services requires that all F-1 or J1 visa undergraduate and graduate international students, regardless of the number of credit hours enrolled, are required to have proof of health insurance, which includes coverage for health evacuation and repatriation.

  • International students entering in the fall term will automatically be charged the prevailing fall health insurance premium and enrolled in the health insurance plan. The premium covers the fall term.
  • International students entering the spring term will automatically be charged the prevailing spring health insurance premium and enrolled in the health insurance plan. The premium covers the spring and summer terms.
  • Health insurance is not automatically charged for the summer term but may be purchased on a voluntary basis directly through the company.

Explanation of Change

There is a provision in the Public Health Service Act and the Affordable Care Act, signed into law in 2010, which requires College and University Student Health Plans to meet certain minimum coverage requirements. As a result of the rules and regulations published by the United States Department of Health and Human Services on March 26, 2012, all Collegiate Student Health Plans must provide minimal limits of $100,000 per year and eliminate any sub-limits for prescription drugs and wellness benefits.

The new federal healthcare laws require parents’ health care to provide coverage for dependents up to age 26, so we encourage our students to investigate that possibility as an alternative to student health insurance. Students should also explore their eligibility for public health benefits before deciding whether or not to waive out of the student insurance program.

Health Insurance Waiver

Students who have other coverage or students who choose not to use this health insurance can deduct the amount of the health insurance from their bill, providing the online Health Insurance Waiver Form is completed no later than the waiver deadline of August for the fall and January for the spring. When the form is submitted and a student is enrolled full-time, a credit will be posted to the student’s account. The Waiver Form will not be available after the waiver deadline.

All full-time registered students who have not submitted a waiver by the published waiver deadline will be enrolled in the group health insurance plan administered by United Health Care Student Resources. Students will then be responsible for payment of the premium charged to their accounts. To find out the details about the United Healthcare plan go to: https://www.uhcsr.com/ and enter MidAmerica Nazarene University in the School’s name box. If you decide to use this coverage, you will use this same site to create a digital insurance card that you keep with you to show medical facilities when needed.

Part-time Students and Full-Time/Part-Time Dependents

The University insurance plan is also available for part-time students. Enrollment is through the Student Accounts Office. Once the Student Accounts Office is notified, the premium charge will appear on a student’s term bill. Please email studentaccounts@mnu.edu to be included in the semester enrollment if you are enrolled part-time.

Dependent coverage is not available under this plan.

NOTE: If a full-time student drops down to part-time status, the Health Insurance charge will automatically be removed from the student’s account. However, if a student uses the insurance prior to removal of the coverage, the Student Accounts Office will manually charge the student’s account at the full amount for the semester.

Enrollment Dates

Fall enrollment: August 1 to December 31
Spring enrollment (includes Summer): January 1 to July 31

NOTE: ID cards are issued to students through the UHCSR website once the University submits a roster to UHCSR on the first Friday of each term. However, if a student needs to seek medical care prior to this date, please contact Herb Albertson in the Cashier’s Office at 913.971.3504. Arrangements will be made with UHCSR to issue an ID card. Issuing an ID card only applies if a student’s term bill is paid or if a student has an authorized deferment authorized by the Cashier’s Office.
